Overview


The Prince George's County Planning Department has completed a study of the Greater Chillum community, which includes the neighborhoods of Avondale, Carole Highlands, Hampshire Knolls, and Lewisdale. The study developed a list of needs and improvement strategies that emphasized neighborhood conservation, pedestrian safety and access, and commercial revitalization.

Objectives


 The project met the following objectives:
  • Build upon existing relationships, and develop new relationships to gather information and garner support.
  • Determine necessary land use changes to implement the study's recommendations.
  • Develop recommendations for improving pedestrian safety and access within the existing transportation network.
  • Develop recommendations to enhance community character and distinguish the area as a distinctive place within the County.
  • Outline approaches to support and improve existing housing, identify opportunities for new residential development, and address issues of foreclosure.
  • Prepare economic development strategies to improve and promote new businesses and real estate development in the area.
  • Provide graphic illustrations of key recommendations.
Project Boundary
The Greater Chillum community is located in an unincorporated area of Prince George's County, east of the City of Takoma Park (Montgomery County), south of Langley Park, west of the City of Hyattsville, and north of the District of Columbia. The sector plan area is comprised of approximately 1,427 acres or 2.3 square miles.
